Granny Stitch, "Rasta" and Ice Cream Scoop hat

I'm not really sure how many hats I've made over the course of the last two weeks but I made four last night including the ice cream scoop hat which I sort of surprised myself with because I didn't intend to make it. I was taking another stab at the cupcake hat I've wanted to make for years and just decided to skip the cake part and do top part which looks like ice cream. I did a simple DC stitch hat pattern in white and when I got to the scalloped edge part of the tutorial I figured what the heck and gave that a try too. And it worked! It came out nice. I'm very impressed with it. I want to perfect it a little more though before I consider listing it in Blythe Warmers.

I have so many patterns in my head right now, all of which I love that sometimes they get a bit jumbled up. I've been patient enough to bookmark them online but I may need to start saving patterns to a drive soon.

I'm hoping to find some fun yarn at Purl in Soho this weekend. Not that I need more yarn but lately I've been thinking to myself, why shouldn't I have as much yarn as I want or have the capacity to store? LOL!!! Of course that's crazy talk. Besides, with the prices at Purl, I won't be able to get very much. However I do have a list of yarn colors and brands I'm looking for. I also need to get back into knitting again as well. My dp needles are feeling neglected. I'm such a freaking Gemini.

Blythe Vacation Commences

I have done nothing the past three days but meet with friends, hang out, eat, drink and walk and walk and walk. Today, Sunday, I do nothing. Or as close to nothing as possible anyway until tomorrow until I catch a plane outta here.

Yesterday I spent a lovely afternoon and evening in Soho with Paula aka brooklynpablita. Remember that name because she's making some adorrrrrable Blythe clothes lately and I am so proud of her rapid progress as she learns all the ins and outs of sewing and patterns and things about miniature clothes which I am frankly bewildered by. All I know is it's really exciting to watch her progress photos and it was even more fun to walk around with her as she selected fabric at this place in Soho called Purl she had heard about and which we decided to visit for the first time yesterday afternoon.

Purl carries both fabric, yarn and notions in a small but sweet, well lit shop on Mercer Street. Paula has a very focused aesthetic and a great sense of pattern matching and I can't wait to see what she makes with what she chose. She was like a kid in a candy store, very much the way I feel around yarn in the winter. I can't get up the same kind of enthusiasm over yarn in the Summer somehow. But they did have some great yarn there that I couldn't help fondling and imagining in future projects, both Blythe and human.

Well, today is the check list day, I've been back and forth and back and forth over whether to bring two Blythes or three, but I think three are probably going to make it I just hope it's not too much to keep track of because I've never taken any Blythe on the plane with me before. The three are Hamsa, the still new, Ellington and Hendrix. I had all three along  with me yesterday to meet up with Paula's Ama, Felix and Max (who is allegedly visiting. LOL!) I think it should work out but I still have to stick a few other major things in with them. We shall soon be airborne where I will report back.

Tilt Neck Licca Bods

I've been seeing these tilt  neck liccas on Flickr for a bit and wondering exactly where people have found them, Through some random incidental Instagram comments I finally spotted a two-for on ebay and won them this morning. The only time I will ever buy bodies for custom use is when they come like this, two at a time. That's how I bought my neemo bodies as well because one just costs too much. One of them I used in my Black Blythe custom, Castaneda. I still have the other one on my book shelf. It's still headless and throwing up a peace sign but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it in the future. I only tried them for the first time because I knew they would hold spray paint well but to me they're more like poseable Emo bodies than anything. I like the subtlety of movement in Liccas more. And Takaras at least can wear a range of different shoes. But I do like the attitude effected by the tilt neck option in neemos a lot so I thought a licca with a tilt head could be very exciting.I just noticed though that these liccas (shown above) look a bit like Takara, Licca hybrids because like torsos never have boob that large and perky. It will be interesting to see what they look like in person.

I used to hate Licca bodies but now I think they are so freaking adorable. The only problem I have with them other than the fact that you can't successfully spray paint them (BOOOOO!!) is that it's hard for a licca girl to sit up on her own because the arms are not very sturdy. But I can live with that.

So I found Blythe Directory just a while ago and already tell I'm not going to get much work done today. What a great little site with such wonderful photos every single Blythe listed by price, appearance and mold! Ummm whaaat?
This is not helping to curb my habit one bit and I was sincerely hoping to. *SIGH!*

For whatever reasons, I've noticed that my "Little Brown Blythe" blurb book has been getting several comments lately in my blurb account. I've been making blurb books for a few years now and have never received (nor expected) one comment until now! There are only a few but I am so honored even for those! One of the people, a young woman, named Christina, left a comment and also plugged my book in her pininterst board! Thank you so much Christina! I'm so glad you liked it! I hope you make your way to this blog and stay in contact!

 It means a lot to me that people have found some inspiration from a book I created specifically to spot light my experience making AA or Black Blythe dolls. I have not actually made one in some time. The last as some of you know was Castaneda who is actually a hybrid, made from a Blybe (Blythe Doll Clone) head and a pure neemo body. She has been put on hold due to eye mech issues. In general, customizing Blythe dolls is not a cheap or easy endeavor, which is why the sale of any custom doll is very pricey. But I do hope to make one some day that I feel is worthy enough to put on the market. Until then I really appreciate the good words and encouragement from you all, blurb contacts and blog followers alike. You inspire me!

I take a lot of Blythe Doll Photos. I've taken a lot of Blythe Doll photos using my iPhone: about 876 or more to be exact are posted to my flickr account. I thought it was time to put together another Blythe Blurb book.
I just love making these and didn't have an immediate theme in mind so I just decided to do it around Blythe phone pics because I just love how they go together and how much they have in common! At it's best, iPhononograpy for me is nostalgic, emotional, quirky, mysterious, dark, funny, random and ironic, many of the same  wonderful qualities that I love about Blythe dolls. I decided to make this one in the smallest trim size available, the square size, which I believe is 7X7 inches. I ordered the first copy in a soft cover with premium matte paper.

I admit to putting this one together a little faster than my previous books. It's kind of an experiment with the interest to do something a bit larger and more involved, perhaps with more of a narrative. Please check it out if you get the chance! I would appreciate any feedback! : )

Back in NYC!

Newport Rhode Island was better than I though it would be even if the one day we were on the beach the sky was covered in fog and the wind was so high and violent it felt like a freakin hurricane was coming. Meanwhile all the New Englanders stood around doing all the normal beach stuff as if every pore of their bodies was not being covered in sand from merely being there.

Angora's hair looked lovely flowing in the hurricane like winds and Hamsa just stretched out for a nap. No one got in the water. I don't go into the ocean unless it's above 90 degrees. I know better.  Now here in NYC it's currently over a hundred. That's when I don't leave the water! LOL!!

*Sigh!* Well the Summer's not over yet. I will have my true beach day before it's done! : D

Hope all your summers are amazing as well. But stay cool and stay indoors if you have to. And of course, stay hydrated.

Are ya ready for the Summer?

Well Summer is definitely here ready or not. It's hitting 100 degrees here in NYC! And we and my sweety are planning a beach vacation for all of next week. Thank God for vacation!!

But now, for me, one of the next challenges is figuring out which of the Blythes will come along with me. Ridiculous right? But I can't pass up the photo opps! I'm trying to be reasonable. In fact I have to be. This is luggage space we're talking about. But I always feel terrible when it's obvious I have favorites and other girls get left out. I think I've been giving Hendrix, my latest gal from Melly Kay, particular favoritism lately. She's just so gosh darned cute and photogenic and travels so well, I can't help it. When I say she travels well, I mean that she just seems to go anywhere. She's adaptable like crazy and I love that. And that's kinda what I need on vacation, plus she has that healthy tanned look! LOL! I may bring Reya (above) as well but with my older customs, I worry about them getting scratched and banged and all kinds of unforeseeable stuff. Not that I don't worry about the others, but Reya's my first AA custom. She's very special. I can't afford to have anything happen to her since it would be very difficult to touch her up. I've decided I can only bring two. Hendrix is definitely in. For the second, I'm thinking either Hamsa, Whitney or Neige. This is so nuts that this is what I'm thinking about. I really need to get a Blythe doll carrier. Yes, they make those.

My Second Elifins Hat

Elisa just posted the second hat she made for me and I love it. I think this one is going to go to Mango Bowie. I think the colors will go wonderfully with her coloring and new blue eyelashes. I purchased the lashes at Urban Outfitters weeks ago but did not really intend them for Bowie. I was bored one day and they're so cool I just decided to try them out on her. They're really quite long and extravagant but I like them. If I decide to let her keep them, I may have to boggle her a bit so that they don't cover her eyes so much when they're open.

I don't have any human resolutions for the New Year just some doll ones. Heehee!

Angora and Tweety

1. I have to stop buying so much stuff and start producing some which means thinking more seriously about creating a pattern for "Heartfelt" dresses, and maybe learning to sew? I mean I have a little machine. Yes, I totally impulsively bought a little yellow sewing machine at Urban Outfitters a week ago out of no where. It was so cute! I couldn't not buy it!

2. I need some new tools for costumizing. I need a new diamond file for lip carving, sand sponges and I've been thinking about getting a can of MSC (Mr. Super Clear) for the first time. I've never used it before but it's supposed to seal in makeup or pastels and any application of makeup or paint work done on the dolls face.

3. I need to finish my pending dolly projects, the thermal changing saran re-root for my ADG, Emily. I need to do some thing with that Blybe I got months ago, I need to get her a new body but I just have not been motivated to do anything with her and I think this may have to do with the challenging experience I had getting all her screws from the seller. It really was the worst dolly transaction I've ever had and it just left me feeling weird when I finally got her. I have not felt anything for her really which is sad, but I know if I could just do something with her, I might be able to transform her into something completely different. I mean I have to try, otherwise the whole thing would have been a total waste. That would be a shame.

I have another petite Blythe on the way, thanks to one of Erica Duh's  adorable pic of one of the Littlest Pets Petites,"Desert Sun." These guys are really affordable though so it wasn't really a burden on my budget. I still deeply lust after a Goldie but that is such a total dream. I can never justify spending that much money on a doll but I continue to adore the heck out of the girl! I mean if was ever lucky enough, my poor Blythes would be green with envy for months.

Then there's Blythecon 2011 on June! I'm excited and freaked out by it at the same time. Dude! It's a plane ride! And possibly a hotel stay! And I just know it will be amazing! I have already pre-registered ages ago,  but ticket prices to Portland, Oregon are definitely too expensive so I guess I'm hoping that part of my tax return this year will be enough. But I also need to invest in some other really important things in my life as well so here's hoping that tickets sales will go down in June so I don't have to contribute too much of my precious tax money. God! Blythecon 2011 is going to be insaaaaaaane!!!

Picture Show! Welcome to my life!!!

 Jewels Blueberry is one of my all time fave Blythe photographers. She was one the first people whose unique, vintage and retro technique I poured over whenever she would post new photos and I would just wonder, how in the heck did she do that? How does she just create this ancient, worn, faded, genuinely vintage look? And it's more than just a look. It's a feeling. And that's hard to accomplish by just pointing a camera at something. That is something inside the photographer which cannot be duplicated, only imitated.

I swear I thought that maybe she was still using film or something! I was so in awe. Finally, I just said, fuck it! I'm going to just ask her. To my great pleasure, she was super nice and always has been. She was kind enough to let me in on some of the filter software she was using. Yesterday she told me about the Picture Show app on iPhone and I just knew that if she was swearing by it, I had to have it. I checked out some of the pictures she had uploaded using it and I was sold!

Among the seven photo apps  have on my iPhone, Picture Show maybe the only one to rival Hipstamatic. Yes, I said it! I installed it yesterday at work and when I got home I spent the rest of the evening snapping away and exclaiming to myself out loud! I just am blown away by how good the filters look and by the combo of frames, vignetting and color adjustments available. It is incredible. I can see that in quality, it is not as subtle as Hipstamatic. In that department, Hipstamatic really does have it all over the other picture apps but it also depends I imagine on how you use it. I have only taken pictures with it using florescent light sources so far. God, only knows what it can do in natural light! I can't wait to see!

A great new photo app is like a new door for me! I swear, it's like everything else that sucks just disappears and all I can see are possibilities! *Aaaaahhh*

NYC Blythe Meet Blast!

I was actually the second one to arrive at St. Alps Teahouse, which means that Mellisa, the organizer was already there as I walked in, she was setting out her dolls (she has more than anyone I know!) on the little tables and taking pics. Oh, I can't tell you how exciting it feels to arrive early and to set my girls out next to Mellisa's and greet everyone else as they arrived just shortly after, some new faces but mostly ones I know. Linda (Hollychan) and her daugther Katie (Blythechan) and Katja (BlytheOwl) Erica, (Ericaduh) and Georgette (I'm not sure I know her name on Flickr, then Damon (devolanges) and Siri who I met for the first time but have seen very often on flickr as IriS*blakK. It's so funny meeting people whose work and you probably are very familiar with and have probably chatted with online but have never met before. I've gotten used to being called by my flickr name, Zanalee. I will say my real name and people are fuzzy and then I say Zanalee and they're like "Ahhhh!!!" LOL!!

Anyway, our little space in the back of St. Alps got pretty full really quickly and within minutes it was abuzz with activity, fabulous Blythes, cameras snapping and bubble tea sipping. I;m so glad to have had this be my third meet. I was so much more relaxed this time.I was able to float around from conversation to conversation of just be quiet, sip my amazing tea (Black Sesame. Uhmmm the best!!) and take pictures and just disappear into the amazing faces of all these incredible customized Blythes, stock Blythes, Kenner Blythes and even *SIGH* a beautiful charismatic, absolutely heart stealing BL that belonged to Hong. You will see in my Blythe Meet stream that I took several of her. God, she just radiates! If any body really loves me, a Goldie or Hollywood Bl for Christmas will be proof of that. LOL!! No, really.

Afterward, we took our customary stroll to Gina Garan's studio where this time I met her son Carpenter for the first time. He greeted us on the hallway where we could already here Gina's voice echoing from her studio. It's always an amazing experience being in Gina's studio and she is just such a genuinely cool lady.

Incidentally, I noticed a lot of new dolls in the space I hadn't seen before and happy to see that there were several dolls of color among them. Not that I feel she is at all responsible to have any around. But it was nice to see more than before. There were these adorable customized petites that I don't remember before at all. Oh! They were so sweet! I wanted to look at every one! It looked as if she had just gotten in a large shipment of stuff because there were lots of boxes stacked on the right as we came in. Some were Blythe wigs and others dolls and some really cool Blythe glasses that I had to tear myself away from.

I was very restrained in my purchases this time. The truth is I had a pretty good idea what I needed for the girls. I just got two tops from Moshi Moshi, waiting on a hat from BK and ahem, have a HOP dress being commissioned as I write this. I'm doing okay. I need to scale back a bit and focus on custom stuff so I mostly bought eye chips I really liked and a few clothes. I had to put away a couple of pairs of shoes I liked because I went over my budget a bit but all in all I got what I needed within my means.

I chatted with Gina a bit about really wanting to have a meet which included customizers so that we could have some carving and make-up tutorials. She said I should drop her a line around the Spring to talk about arranging something. I would be sooooo jazzed for that! Imagine? I mean that would rock my socks!! LOL!!

I also had a great chat with Erica about making Black Blythes and she told me a little about her technique coloring eyelids with pastels. Her work is just amazing. Also, it's become apparent that I should be using MSC (Mr. Super Clear) to seal in my work when I'm done to protect it I suppose from smudging and other elements. I've been aware of the use of MSC in doll customs for a while now but I wasn't sure how necessary it was to use until I spoke with Erica. So I'll have to get some pretty soon.

I also talked a bit of camera shop with Katie because I saw that she was shooting with a film camera at the meet and she had a lomo flash attached to Nikon EM which turned out to be the exact same model I have. I was impressed with the attachment of the plastic powder blue Lomo attached to this old black manual camera. She showed me the adapter that allowed the flash to be compatible with it. She also told me about the cool effects you can get shooting expired film. I've seen many photos I love shot with expired film on flickr so I'm really excited to try it myself.  So I had a really great time. I mean I was on a high all day afterward! But that could also be because I was starving and forgot to to eat anything all day besides that bubble tea. LOL!!

This Just In!!

So I've been looking to swap Sabine's Prima Dolly Aubrey scalp for a "Simply Mango" scalp for a while now. I had the offer up for a bit on Plastic Paradise but didn't get any takers at least not soon enough for me anyway. So I put Sabine up on ebay hoping that maybe I could just buy "Simply Mango" with the cash I got for Sabine. I don't really need the whole doll, just the scalp. I had so much fun with it when I bought "Simply Mango" months ago to customize and create Neige, one of my Black Blythes. I swapped that existing Mango Scalp for a "Heather Sky" scalp  which I feel suits Neige perfectly. Again I was fortunate to find someone to trade with rather quickly. But I have to tell you that while I had "Simply Mango" I adored her and that beautiful fruity colored hair. She took such great pictures! I vowed to buy her again if I could and then it occurred to me that if I could just get a hold of the scalp I could make any existing RBL I have into a virtual "Simply Mango" Blythe.  But I haven't found anyone willing to give up that Mango scalp again. And Sabine did not make a sale. So...

So this weekend I was randomly searching ebay for prices on blank Blythe scalps, with a mohair project in mind, because even though I still have the thermal saran re-root to finish, my mind has been toying with the idea of doing another mohair re-root just because I love mohair and the mohair look so much. I really want to take another crack at it.  I was not expecting to see a brand new "Simply Mango" scalp up for auction from someone who like I, explained that she also bought Simply Mango to customize and no longer needed the scalp! OMG!!!! It was meant to be! But I still had about 20 hours to wait and watch before I could put a bid in and I was thankful up until the very last minute that I was the only bidder. Oh YES!!!! I won it about 5 minutes ago! This means Sabine gets to stay and be reborn with a Mango scalp and I don't have to buy another doll! I will be putting her Prima Dolly Aubrey scalp up for sale on PP shortly.  One item from my dolly wish list down! WOOT!

Arriving/Awaiting/Planning/News

Plastic Paradise ia a buy/sell/trade/forum I have not always found the easiest to navigate. In the past, I have only gone there to get in on the amazing used sale deals on clothes, shoes, what have you. And my transactions have always been perfect, smooth, quick, excellent. A while back because of the unfortunate event of a "bad dolly deal" tighter security measures had to be taken which required me to visit more often in order to access the marketplace once again. My access had been restricted since I never logged in to do anything but shop and for a while I stayed away thinking it was best for my wallet anyway, but after a while I wanted in again and with the help of a PP administrator who is also a flickr contact, I was able to post my way back in and through doing so I discovered what a great community Plastic Paradise really is, and what a difference it makes to post and discuss Blythe stuff in a place where everyone loves Blythe. The expertise, advice, and support is just wonderful. Also, they seem to have recently installed a system which alerts you when you have a new message if you're logged in. At least I think its new. I don't remember ever getting alerted when I had a new message in the past. Whenever I would inquire after something in the market place, I would just keep checking bask to see if a response came in. Yes, I just bought a couple of pairs of Blythe shoes from cybermelli's cleanout sale. They're loafers. I need to get myself a pair as well. : )

Erica, another PP administrator has announced that Plastic Paradise will become Blythe Kingdom on October 22nd. I love the new graphic and I can't wait to see what other new improvements they make since I plan to visit more often from now on.

In other news, I am also awaiting, another doll. No, not a Blythe! Another Barbie! I know! What's happening right? Well what's happening is too many people on flickr are taking pics of Barbies that I absolutely fall in love with on the spot. This one is Trixie, inspired by a character in the Speed Racer movie which I did not see. It seems I cannot resist a little black bob and a clever side long glance. It's all mimimaus2009's fault. When I saw the set of twins I just flipped and started looking all over for her, who she was, how much.

Things in the works, ummm I still have that thermal changing orange saran re-root which I shamefully admit has taking me almost a year to finish.
It's getting down to the wire today with my two girls, Molly and Sabine for sale on ebay. There are more watchers for Molly than Sabine which I didn't expect since she's the least finished looking. But then she is cheaper. We'll see what happens.

On flickr one the most rampant discussions of excitement over this new Blythe Doll center around her questionable complexion. People want to know if she is as described, as dark as Heather Sky who, lets face it, is really not that dark, but as the darkest Blythe doll ever manufactured, she has become the standard by which to measure any other dark Blythe Doll Takara and CWC releases. Which is kind of sad but no less fascinating. I myself flipped when I saw her although I have to admit to being just as excited about her amazing stock as about her skin color. It seems kind of crazy how color starved we doll collectors are. I mean I guess that's where all this customization comes into play. Not only are we color starved in doll land but also individuality starved.

I must say though, that while it is easy enough to do anything from dye Blythe's hair, carve her lips, give her beauty marks, tattoos, gaze correction, and all kinds of different hair, it doesn't have quite the same impact or social commentary as changing her color does. Much as I love Blythe and dolls in general, politics never seem to be too far behind when it comes to color in this country, but my fascination lies in discovering the things that Blythe collectors do in spite of this because it is different than what I have ever seen people do with any other doll I know of.

ADAD (A Doll a Day 365 on flickr)

Remember when I was doing Blythe 365 on flicker? It was a photo challenge that required all participants to take one picture of one Blythe doll a Day for a year. Reya, my selected doll and I failed on day 47. I can't really explain to you the pressure to be creative with one doll each and every day for days leading into months. I really admire those who succeed with it and really enjoy seeing their work.

Several weeks ago I dedicated myself to yet another 365 challenge; A Doll a Day. This one has been going much smoother because it allows me to take a picture of any doll I have, at least one, every day for a year. I'm on day 75 and don't feel any pressure at all. I had the terrible habit on occasion of forgetting and submitting photos to the pool after midnight but it doesn't seem be a problem. Check 'em out of you like.

Several words jumped out at me while sitting here in my living room reading this. "Wild," "Dramatic," "African American and bi-racial." Wow. I guess this is equivalent to how kinkier hair would be described if it were sold to the larger fake hair market except that there is no market among most women who where fake hair for this type of texture. It's kind of a trip thinking about it. I live for this mohair for a Black Blythe doll though. I just know it would be perfect and it's just what I want. So occasionally I just got to the site and stare at it. I may have to stop staring soon.
