Middie Minaj #1 is now up for adoption at Little Brown Blythe and she's so cute that yes, I admit it was a bit hard to list her. Hahaha! But she is ready and looking for a new home and I am so proud to have completed her just before the holidays. She would make such a terrific gift!

I gave her bangs an edgy bias cut tonight and will be snipping any stray ends this weekend but Middie Minaj #1 in my series of Black Middie Customs inspired by Nicky Minaj is done and will go up for adoption on Little Brown Blythe on Monday. Customizing her, though at times stressful has been so much fun! Again as when I first began customizing Black Blythes, watching a doll become more and more distinct with every step is just such a rewarding experience. She is so darling and I adore her so much that  know I have to do another right away. Custom Middie have a very different charm than full sized Blythes. They may seem a bit stiff and limited at first but with a little coaxing, they actually have quite a bit  going on behind those wistful gazes. Below are Middie Minaj's stats.

Blythe Frocentric

For me, one of the great things about having a significant number of Blythes is that whenever I get a little bored with one or two (and I sometimes do) I can always shake things up a bit by pulling one off the shelf that has been idle while I'm shooting another girl or girls. Last night I grabbed Castaneda off the shelf because I had this idea which was inspired by my natural hair board on pinterest.

I've been seeing a lot of frohawks in the streets and on pinterest lately and I just love them so much, I figured, why not try it out on my one sweet fro headed doll, Castaneda? I just love it! I had no idea this little fro wig could be so versatile and I'm super excited to try other styles on her as well. I don't see very many Black Blythes with super curly or ethnic "natural" hair very often and I really love to see a diversity of Urban hair styles projected on Blythes as well as a diversity of colors. So I'll be really brain storming new ways to bring another Fro girl to life because there just needs to be more don't you think? ^__^

Monster High/Pinterest Sidebar

So if you don't happen to know this yet, I am a Pinterest junkie. Follow me on Pinterest and you will discover the truth yourself. It's not that I spend a huge amount of time there but when I am there I am never bored, always discovering, learning, sharing and just so impressed by all the inspiration there is to be found on the countless boards that are created. That being said, I also love Monster High Dolls. I have repeatedly tried to make announcements to the affect that "This is my last MH Doll" but the fact is I can no longer claim that when they keep coming out with fantastic and fierce new designs! So, cutting the chase, I was just checking my pinterest notifications and saw that a "Monster High Doll" had repinned one of my MH pins and decided to take a look at that board. Here's what it is:

All of this person's favorite Monster High dolls but with accompanying pins that go along with the theme of that particular doll! It's genius and I love it! For instance, I clicked on her board for Lagoona and found these amazing sea creature tentacle inspired earrings!

Click on Howleen Wolf and you see this beauty with a ruby colored bouffant fro! For those of you who are so inclined this would a great way to incorporate Monster High like style and details into your wardrobe as a tribute to your favorite Monster High Dolls. It's also just one of a hundred examples of how amazingly creative Pinterest can be.

Middie Minaj Update

Middie Minaj #1 is coming along slowly but surely and will soon be up for adoption at Little Brown Blythe. It's been very interesting watching her come together. I think she is so sweet. The small scale of Middies makes work on them somewhat faster and less painstaking give or take a few details.

I really adore Melo Melo Middie a lot and can't wait to customize another version, most likely, Francoise Ananassa to keep to the theme of fantasy colored hair which I am becoming obsessed with.

My Muse

My first in a small series of Middie Customs for Little Brown Blythe inspired by Nicki Minaj is almost complete. I just have to paint her lips and her body now. I have heard some nightmares particularly from Erica Fustero whose customs I love about opening Middie Blythe's head. I messaged her on flickr to express my anxiety and she was very helpful. Fortunately I was very successful with opening this Middie's head. It came apart perfectly with just some gentle prying. I painted her very quickly and with very little fuss. I think because Middies are a smaller scale and there is less surface area, it's not so difficult to get the plates covered quickly. I have painted her face plates, applied make-up to her face plate and lids using pastels and sealed her with MSC. So she should be completely done by next week and if all goes well up for sale in Little Brown Blythe.

 

Hello Melo and Blythecon NYC!

So i have to say that when I'm done customizing her and shipping her off to some lucky duck, this girl will be joining my collection again.

She is darned adorability!!! I am so glad I got her and I can't wait to see how she turns out as a Little Brown Middie! Plus she got here from CCToys in Hong Kong so quickly!

Oh it was a good day today! And on top of all that, thanks to a lovely friend I got my ticket to Blythecon 2013 today!

So many amazing people are going to be there! I cannot believe that I finally get to meet them all in one place! It's going to be unbelievable.

The space that Erica Duh has booked looks ideal, so much like what I imagined when I thought of a space for BlytheCon in NYC. She has done an amazing job organizing this event and deserves so much credit with keeping a calm head while dealing with endless scheduling challenges and lord knows what else behind the scenes.

If my mohair re-root on Whitney isn't in the cards, I think I will do a saran re-root for her instead using this knot method. I am super excited right now. This appears to be the answer to my re-rooting dreams. LOL! I get so tense about starting these projects. I like to be able to cut down the possibility for screw ups as much as possible and I think this may be the solution.

It's totally happening! I can't wait! OMG! There's so much to do, to prepare, money to save, people I'm so excited about meeting for the first time. I have not been able to attend any of the Blythecons so this is really huge for me and I'm hoping it will be spectacular.

2013 is like right around the corner. and time has been flying so quickly lately so I'm not even going to act like it's a long way off. Once 2013 hits, October 10th will be here in no time. I really hope to be able to donate some things to the convention or help in any way I can. And I hope to meet so many of you guys as well! I hope you will try and make it, even if you are far away. I am so psyched and so thankful to Erica Duh for making this a reality.

Whitney: Born Again

I've been working on and off on Whitney's face-up for months now. I really like how it's going so far. The lips which drive me crazy have turned out much better than I expected. I'm really just experimenting with a few techniques (or creating new ones?) to try and get the look I want. I get the feeling that so much about well carved lips have to do with both skill and imagination. The idea is to make you think you're seeing more than what's there, which is essentially what any good make-up artist knows.

I'm no expert as yet but I love the challenge of working and reworking different approaches to a variety of different looks and the way that it can complete transform, enhance or bring out a dolls soul. Skill, imagination and magic I say.

How Shannon stole my heart

So I finally found a tilt neck licca body to try on my Hollywood Blythe, Whitney once I'm done customizing her. Yes, the body has a head attached to it but I didn't imagine that being a problem since I've never really cared for Licca Chan dolls. I don't hate them but seeing them in photos and Dolly mags, I was never moved by them at all. They all looked exactly alike to me and very one dimensional. I just wanted that tilt neck. That was all. I just think the tilt head on Blythe is so adorable.

So when I got my Licca Chan in the mail last week, I opened the box and there she was this perfect little doll with pink heart shaped earrings, a simple pink gingham dress and a brand new pair of pink flats in a separate bag. I checked to see if her head tilted and it did. And I think that must have been what did it. I don't know what came over me but she just seemed so simple, sweet and unassuming, I got attached and called her Shannon and played with her a lot. LOL!  I haven't had her a week yet and she already has 26 photos in her flickr set. I think she might me like my female Wataru doll. I have always been amused by photos of this rare vintage Licca doll in my contacts' flickr stream but he's way too expensive and stiff for me. Where as Shannon was cheap, sweet, with a surprising photographic range and completely unexpected! No, this is not another doll line craze. Shannon will be my one and only Licca. I will not make the mistake of thinking this magic will happen again. I need to stay focused. I may pop her head off yet just to see if my HB is compatible. But I'll definitely be buying another tilt neck licca (without the head this time) because Shannon wouldn't the same without it

A few weeks ago I got a message from Fanny Zara who writes one of my favorite Blythe Blogs, Mademoiselle Blythe. She wanted to feature me in a blog she was writing about Black Blythes and people who customize them. I was so excited! She also features two amazing Black Blythe creators, Lunita and my Kyi of My Delicious Bliss whom I have had the great pleasure of communicating and exchanging ideas with over this exciting subject.

I just love reading Fanny's customizer interviews because they really ground and contextualize this incredible hobby by introducing you to the people who really dedicate themselves in a multitude of unique, creative and interpretive ways to aspects of Blythe which they dearly love.  So you see why I was over the moon to be apart of it and share my experiences discovering Blythe, collecting Blythe and making my first ever custom Black Blythes.

So my Blythe Post etsy shop is officially closed! All of the postcards that were available there are now available to be purchased at Little Brown Blythe which is where I will continue to list all my Blythe Doll creations as well as future custom Black Blythes! Speaking of which!!!

Blythe and Nicki should definitely meet

I was doing some research on the Middie Blythe I will be purchasing for my next custom last night and was thinking of doing something sort of fantastical, fun and celebrity themed. I've never been a fan of Nicki Minaj but it occurred to me suddenly that hers is the look I'm going for. I mean Nicki is basically this great big human doll anyway and if nothing else I think she's really great at it! Her fantasy colored wigs immediately call to mind some of my favorite coveted stock Blythe dolls such as Alexis Emerald, Simply Peppermint and Simply Bubble Boom just to name a few! The last couple of stock Middie Blythes released also have that great fantasy colored hair. Sadly these Blythes are not manufactured as Black dolls which is a shame. I will be changing that at least to a small degree in the next coming weeks.

The Merging of Blythe Post and Blythe Warmers

In the next few days I will be merging my Blythe Post Etsy shop with my Blythe Warmers Etsy Shop to create Little Brown Blythe which is already live on Etsy.  From now on Little Brown Blythe will house items from both shops as well as my future Black Blythe customs. Yep! You heard right! Some new Black Blythe Customs are on their way and will be featured at Little Brown Blythe as well as cute knits, hand crochet hats and beautiful full color postcard stationary. 

I am still in the process of moving postcards over from Blythe Post to Little Brown Blythe but everything should be consolidated on this site by the end of the week so please check in.

I will be making two more this week, one will be a white Vanilla Bean Scoop and the other is for a reserved listing. I'm toying with the idea of making a different color cherry although I know that the red is classic and I love making them. I think it might fun to experiment with different colors just to see how it translates.

Sunday with Pablita

 I had such a lovely time in Soho with Pabilita this Sunday. She has returned from being overseas in London and was so sweet to bring back a BCUK (Blythe Con UK) tote bag for me! I'm loving it! We were supposed to meet at Mooncake Restaurant on Watts but it was closed so we brunched on St. Marks instead. She also to took me to a sweet little Churreria on Mulberry Street for my first ever Churros with hot chocolate sauce which I just loved so much! I have seen Churros sold by street vendors for many years but never knew what they were until now. I will definitely be returning.

Before La Churreria though, we  heading over to Purl on Sullivan street where I discovered that I really don't need overpriced yarn right now the way I thought I might. I'm going to stick to my cheap Red Heart stock because I know now exactly what I want to make with it. I already have expensive yarn sitting around with no plans for use, which is usually what happens when I buy yarn that looks and feel pretty but have no real clue what I will use it for. So I've decided to be sensible for a change and stock up on more colors at Michaels after work today for some more "Scoop" hats I'll be making this week. I'm excited to experiment more and maybe actually list one or two in shop. So stay tuned!

Hat Thang 2

Granny Stitch, "Rasta" and Ice Cream Scoop hat

I'm not really sure how many hats I've made over the course of the last two weeks but I made four last night including the ice cream scoop hat which I sort of surprised myself with because I didn't intend to make it. I was taking another stab at the cupcake hat I've wanted to make for years and just decided to skip the cake part and do top part which looks like ice cream. I did a simple DC stitch hat pattern in white and when I got to the scalloped edge part of the tutorial I figured what the heck and gave that a try too. And it worked! It came out nice. I'm very impressed with it. I want to perfect it a little more though before I consider listing it in Blythe Warmers.

I have so many patterns in my head right now, all of which I love that sometimes they get a bit jumbled up. I've been patient enough to bookmark them online but I may need to start saving patterns to a drive soon.

I'm hoping to find some fun yarn at Purl in Soho this weekend. Not that I need more yarn but lately I've been thinking to myself, why shouldn't I have as much yarn as I want or have the capacity to store? LOL!!! Of course that's crazy talk. Besides, with the prices at Purl, I won't be able to get very much. However I do have a list of yarn colors and brands I'm looking for. I also need to get back into knitting again as well. My dp needles are feeling neglected. I'm such a freaking Gemini.

Hat Thang

The week in crochet hats (some of them anyway)

I've been crocheting hats like a maniac these past couple of weeks mostly because it makes me insanely happy. I've been getting Red Heart yarn in all the primary colors and it's like a whole new world. I used to kind of snub my nose at Red Heart yarn because they seemed common and tacky and I was drawn more to the expensive boutique yarns. But Red Heart is the bomb and primary color combos are so invigorating and fun! Plus it's all about the the creativity not just the materials. Just because you have pretty high end yarn, it doesn't automatically mean you're going to create a masterpiece.

Last night I was inspired by the Rainbow Mohawk helmet in the photo above which I pinned on my "Crafty" Pinterest Board to try making a Blythe sized version and I just freaking love how it came out! It's so funky and fun and unique! I then made another mini sized version for petite Blythe modeled above by Dusty and I could just die whenever I look at that thing! It's so sweet! Definitely making more of both and perfecting the process as I go so that I can put some in the shop. I desperately need to learn to crochet ear flaps. That's my next challenge which I have chosen to accept. YAAAAYY!!

My First Blythe Doll Helmets

I'm supposed to be studying for my environmental Science midterm but instead I'm thinking about making more Blythe Doll helmets.

I have a strangely combined nature of easily distracted, bored, discouraged and yet determinedness that I don't all together understand as yet. That's just to say that I spent most of this week crocheting furiously, watching youtube tutorials, doing research in the craft sections at a couple of Barnes & Nobles bookstores, just trying to get a working knowledge of things I thought I understood about crochet's basic stitches. While trying to understand crochet is  infuriating to me, it's seemingly endlessly potential to create alternative patterns is fascinating to me and keeps me coming back even when I think I've given up for good. I  do tend to get ahead of myself when I'm trying to learn something new so I'm not completely blameless in my frustrations. It's hard for me to start at the bottom when I think I understand something sophisticated about a process.

I don't know how many hats in how many different yarns I started this week before throwing my hands up in exasperation and dropping them because they didn't turn out the way I thought they should. I'm also really bad at following patterns. Yes I will start on one at first and then decide to go my own way, thinking I know better and end up, well...unhappy.

So this Friday I did a simple google search for crochet hat patterns specifically for Blythe Dolls since there are no youtube tutorials that I know of. And I found two really good ones. One of which I will share here is from a blog called "This is a Story About Five Girls". It is the pattern I used to create the Blythe Doll helmets in above which I will put up for sale in Blythe Warmers some time this week.
The pattern is so simple and easy to remember. I was so jazzed that it turned out absolutely perfect! I didn't do the bear ears as this pattern called for although I might try that one day. I simply wanted to get the pattern for the hat itself that it is possible I can start to improvise from there with some measure of confidence.

Pretty Blythe Weekend

NYC Blythe Meet

The NYC Blythe meet was at the same location as the last, Cowgirl NYC. I won't be giving them any shout outs in this entry though because they were kind of irritating about reservation size limits and just generally giving the coordinator, Melissa a bit of a hard time. Whatever. It was a small group but a pleasant afternoon and it was good to see some old and new faces.

Ramona Rae and Castaneda at Lenox Coffee in Harlem

Later on that day I was delighted to be a working photographer for my dear friend Cece at her fabulously attended even "Love Songs and Curvy Conversations" at Lenox Coffee. She sang and talked with a packed house about a range of issues affecting curvy and plus sized ladies from clothes and men to online dating and self esteem. It was an amazing night and I was so proud to be apart of it. On Sunday we met at Lenox Coffee again to go over some the press photos I took and she brought Ramona Rae, one of the first Brown Blybe I ever made for her birthday a few years ago. She is now visiting with me and I'll be giving her new pull rings, strings and maybe a few hats and things. Looking at her, I just remember everything that went into making her and how much Cece loved getting her and I'm still really moved by all that. I would love to make another Brown Blybe, but I already have several unfinished custom projects on hold so need to complete those first. But I have some ideas brewing and I'm really excited about them. So stay tuned.

Beanies at Blythe Warmers!

I had the urge for knitting and crocheting last weekend and whipped up a couple of fun colorful beanies for the shop. I've stayed away from bright colors in my crocheting for some time now but I decided to go the other way lately, especially since I love color. I think I've been afraid that too much color might look tacky or too silly or something but I love it! These two beanies are available at Blythe Warmers now.

I will definitely be experimenting with more color in the future. It's very exciting to me to see the finished product in these pieces. It just makes me want to make more and more.

Our Moshi Moshi "Annie Hall" shirt just arrived today! I wasn't sure who would get to wear it first and then I spotted Castaneda in the same halter dress she's been wearing for nearly a month and grabbed her.

This girl can work anything! I just adore her! I'm starting to doubt I will ever think of selling her again. She just brings me so much joy and smiles. I love what she does for this shirt. EEEP!!!I need one more! LOL!

Dolly Mail News!

Moshi Moshi Annie Hall Shirt

So I was sitting at my desk at work yesterday at 5:00, normally the time I'm running for the door, but instead I'm counting down the seconds to the Moshi Moshi Studio Etsy update. 5:00pm on the dot, 10:00pm UK time, all the goodies are up but there's only one thing I want and it's my second Annie Hall Blythe shirt.

I've learned to think quickly during these updates because I've had several items ripped right of my cart on the way to check out and it is never cool. With the Annie Hall shirt Hilary makes, of which I have become a huge fan, I've learned to look first at the shirt material and then at the tie material. If I like one or the other enough, I grab it. For my last purchase I went for the tie material. This time I went for the shirt. I really love the pattern and the olive green color. Miraculously, it is mine. I would love to say that this is the last one for some time but I just can't. It's almost like winning an auction on ebay! It's just too much of a rush! And I adore these shirts so much! I wish she made them in my size!

As if that was not enough, I get a text from my sweety right after I leave work that I have dolly mail at home!!! What could be better? I finally got a Shershe original Pom Pom knit dress! I've been loving them forever and finally got around to contacting her for a commission a few weeks ago. It is the softest, most delicate, floofiest most darling thing ever! I just love looking at it! It is so sweet, I knew it had to go on Hendrix first. But I'm sure she's willing to share. Sherri's Pom Pom dresses are just so sweet and simple, with colors that are just so cheery and textures so dandelion like, they appear to be able to float. I may need one more. I'm hopeless. In the mean time, as per usual, I haven't shopped for myself in ages. LOL!

Been out sick

Sorry for the long dull silence but I have had bronchitis for over two weeks and have only started to recover recently.

During that time I was so lethargic and even a bit depressed that I almost felt I was no longer even interested in taking dolly pics or making reports. Bronchitis, while it runs it's course through your system, only gives you enough energy to hold your body up so you can cough your brains out before collapsing again. But I think I'm steadily beginning to make a come back.

There is an NYC Blythe meet coming up soon which I do plan to attend, at least for a couple of hours or so. Sometimes you just get sick of your own dollies and really need to see others in order to be inspired again. It's what I really love most about Blythe meets. That and having all the patrons at the selected venue stare at us with combinations of wonder, shock and unexplainable envy.

Four Faces of Emily

Emily was my first Blythe ever, a PWP ADG and I have put her through so much, from a really bad dye job (cause ADG hair is just not very versatile) to a blue bob wig she wore for over a year while I re-rooted her old scalp with Thermal changing orange saran. I'm really happy she hung in there and is still around while others have left.

I have to say that the thermal changing orange saran and I guess the whole thermal changing series of saran colors are just a dream to photograph. Since the hair itself changes from orange to yellow and back in response to heat and touch, you never know exactly what you're going to get when you play with it! I just love that! It's so experimental and alive. I get my saran from My Little Customs usually and when they're out of what I need I go to Restore Doll. Both are superb resources for Saran and rooting tutorials as well as other dolly custom materials. I can't wait to get started on my alpaca re-root. I'm hoping the coolcat scalp will get here sometime this week.

Does anyone know how to perforate a black scalp? How big do you usually male the holes? What pattern do you usually use? And what about thatching? I'm still a bit intimidated by thatching but clearly I need to get over it so any advice or tutorials you can offer out there in dolly land would be greatly appreciated.

Emily has been tied up since Friday night when I finally completed her Orange thermal changing Saran re-root. WHEW! I started the thing in 2010 people! Oh, that sounds crazy just hearing it!

But anyway, flaws, part thatching still pending, it is done. And I'm not taking the rubber bands off until tomorrow because it's a lot of hair and I am not going to be happy if it falls off because I didn't leave her wrapped up long enough. That happened to to me more times than I care to mention with Bowie's "Simply Mango" scalp and all her flanges are completely intact. It was just a scalp switch. But the scalp was constantly falling out of the dome! Finally I just ended up adding Crazy Glue in with the Tacky glue. That was that.

I think I will release Emily from her rubber band torture sometime tomorrow evening.

I'm waiting for my blank coolcat scalp to come in so that I can start on Whitney's alpaca re-root next. I'm hoping that by making the holes in the scalp myself which will be the first time ever for me, I may be able to make the whole re-root process a little easier on myself. We shall see.

St. Croix Blythe

We're all back from vacation feeling relaxed and renewed for the time being. Three days at work and I'm still feeling a little afterglow. And in my dolly world there's already a lot of activity going on. I came back very determined to continue and complete Emily's thermal change orange re-root and I'm happy to say I have made  lot of progress and have very little left to do. I am at the very edge of her scalp and hoping what I have left of the saran will be enough. I may have to skip a few holes in the back as a I go. It's a heck of a lot of hair. I've learned that it's not necessary to fill the holes with large hooks of saran to get a full head of hair. But I went a little crazy when I started a year ago and probably wasted a lot of saran.

For my next re-root I will try to be much more economical. And yes, I already have the hair and just ordered a coolcat scalp this morning. This re-root is intended for my Hollywood Blythe Whitney who I am still in the process of customizing. I actually ordered the hair while I was still on vacation and it arrived yesterday from Stephanie A Smith. It's an ounce of pink brushed suri alpca and I'm not a pink person but I saw it and couldn't resist. If it was just a flat pink I would never have bought it but this has gradients of pink, fushia and even brown in it. And I've been dying to do an alpaca re-root since I saw my first alpaca re-root Blythe at an NYC meet. It is so insanely soft, it's unbelievable. I can't wait to get started but I absolutely will not touch it until I am done with Emily's. She's been wearing a wig for the longest! LOL!!

Brushed Suri Alpaca for re-rooting

So before I left for vacation, I was already not looking forward to returning to work and decided to order something to make me happy upon my return. I know. It's like that. What can I say? So I purchased "Roller Maze" Lagoona from Amazon. And then while I was in Palisades over the weekend after I came back to the states, I saw "So In Style Trichelle" at Target for a reduced price. I have been looking at Trichelle for a long time and just loving her but never found her at a price I thought was reasonable. This time it just seemed right. Plus she was the last one one in that section. I will be looking to re-body her though because I really don't like Barbie bodies very much.

I just love Trichelle's face. It's so sassy and cute and something else. I really like that Mattel created this unique mold because she actually looks familiar to me like a face I would see in New York. In my mind, she's from the Caribbean. She's Caribbean American but she was born in Brooklyn like me. Haha!!

"Roller Maze Lagoona"

The first thing that struck me about "Roller Maze" Lagoona is how much yellower her hair is than "Skull Shores." I have to get used to her pink lips as well. It's always weird for me when I get a MH duplicate in a different series, especially when I love the first one as much as I love "Skull Shores" Lagoona. But I definitely like "Roller Maze" a lot. I was bit disappointed though that she didn't come with a brush. Not that I don't already have plenty of MH brushes but I kind of look forward to them. That Barbie brush bitch in me has just never died. LOL! Other than that, her skates, helmet and knee pads are so dope! The wheels are real and she has a little Shaka sign hand on her right arm which I adore!

I haven't deboxed Trichelle as yet but will probably get to it this weekend. Until my next update Stay cool!
